FAQ's: Basics
Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?
No. You can call us directly. We’ll keep your dentist in the loop.
What’s the difference between braces and clear aligners?
Both move teeth. Braces are fixed on your teeth. Aligners are removable trays you change on a set schedule. We’ll help you choose what fits your goals and lifestyle.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
It depends on your case. Minor shifts can be a few months. More complex cases take longer. You’ll get a clear timeline at your consult.
Do you treat adults?
Yes. Many of our patients are adults who want a healthier, better-looking smile with discreet options.
FAQ's: Braces
Do braces hurt?
You may feel tender for a few days after starting or after adjustments. Soft foods help. Over-the-counter pain relief can be used as directed.
What can I eat with braces?
Soft foods at first. Avoid very hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can break brackets (ice, nuts, taffy, caramel).
A bracket came loose. What should I do?
Cover it with orthodontic wax for comfort. If it comes off, save it in a small bag and call us. We’ll fix it. See details on our Emergency Info page.
Can I play sports or instruments with braces?
Yes. Use a mouthguard for contact sports. Most instrument players adjust quickly.
FAQ's: Aligners
How many hours a day should I wear aligners?
Aim for 20–22 hours a day. Take them out to eat, drink anything but water, and brush.
Can I drink coffee with aligners in?
Remove aligners for anything besides water. Hot drinks can warp them. Rinse before putting trays back in.
How do I clean aligners?
Rinse with cool water and brush gently with a soft toothbrush. Use clear, unscented soap if needed. Avoid hot water and colored mouthwash.
I lost or cracked an aligner. What now?
Don’t force a damaged tray. Wear the previous well-fitting set and call us for next steps.
FAQ's: Timing & Visits
When should kids first see an orthodontist?
Around age 7 is a good time to check growth and timing. Many kids won’t need treatment yet—we’ll simply monitor.
How long is the first visit?
Plan for 45–60 minutes so we can take photos/X-rays if needed, do an exam, and answer questions.
How often will I have appointments?
We’ll set a schedule based on your plan. Many patients come in every few weeks for quick checks.
Can I start treatment the same day?
Sometimes. If you’re ready and it makes sense, we can often take initial records that day.
FAQ's: Costs & Insurance
How much do braces or aligners cost?
It depends on your case and goals. You’ll get a clear fee and timeline at your consult.
Do you offer monthly payment plans?
Yes. Flexible options are available. See details on our Financial Info page.
Do you take my insurance?
We work with most plans that include orthodontic benefits. We’ll verify coverage and estimate your out-of-pocket.
Can I use HSA/FSA funds?
In most cases, yes. Bring your card and we’ll help you apply it correctly.
FAQ's: Comfort & Emergencies
What counts as an emergency?
Severe pain, injury, swelling, fever, or a metal piece stuck in soft tissue—call us right away. For injuries or trouble breathing, go to urgent care/ER first.
How do I handle a poking wire?
Use orthodontic wax. Try to gently tuck it back with clean tweezers or a pencil eraser. If needed, clip a tiny end and call us. See our Emergency Info page for steps.
Is soreness normal?
Mild tenderness for a few days after starting or adjustments is common. Soft foods and salt-water rinses help.
FAQ's: Retainers & Aftercare
Will I need a retainer?
Yes. Retainers keep your new smile in place.
How long do I wear a retainer?
Plan on nightly wear long-term. Your exact plan comes with your case.
How do I clean my retainer?
Rinse with cool water. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush. Avoid hot water.
I lost/broke my retainer. What now?
Call us. We’ll help you replace it so teeth don’t shift.
FAQ's: Kids & Teens
What is “Phase 1” treatment?
Early, limited treatment to guide growth or make room for teeth. Not every child needs it. If it’s not time yet, we’ll monitor.
Will my child miss school?
Most visits are short. We’ll help you schedule with school and activities in mind.
Can parents come back to the clinic?
Yes. You’re welcome to be involved and ask questions..
FAQ's: Adults
Is adult orthodontics different?
We focus on gum health, bite, and any dental work you already have. Clear aligners and low-profile braces are popular with adults.
Can I get orthodontics with crowns or an implant?
We move teeth, not implants. Many cases can be treated around existing dental work. We’ll coordinate with your dentist when needed.
