Retainers and Aftercare in Columbus, MS
Protect your smile investment with proper retention care. Dr. Callaway explains retainer types, care instructions, and how to keep your results lasting a lifetime.
Why Retainers Matter
When active orthodontic treatment concludes, the retention phase begins. Your teeth and surrounding tissues are still adapting to their new positions, and without proper retention, teeth can gradually shift back toward their original positions. Your custom retainer maintains your smile’s alignment while your bone and soft tissue fully stabilize around the new tooth positions.
Important: Your first set of retainers is included with your treatment. If a retainer is lost or damaged, contact our office immediately—replacement retainers are available for a fee, and prompt replacement is essential for maintaining your results.
The Types We Use at Smiles by Callaway
- Clear (Removable) Retainers Clear plastic trays similar to aligners, created from precise 3D-printed models of your teeth. They’re comfortable to wear, nearly invisible, and easy to clean.
- Fixed/Bonded Retainers A slim wire bonded behind your teeth—most commonly the lower front teeth—to maintain alignment continuously. While virtually invisible, you’ll need to use special flossing techniques, which we’ll demonstrate for you.
When appropriate, Dr. Callaway may also recommend a traditional Hawley retainer (acrylic and wire) for enhanced durability or specific bite requirements.
How Long You'll Wear Retainers
Dr. Callaway will create a personalized retention schedule for your specific needs. Most patients follow this pattern:
- Begin with more frequent wear (often nearly full-time for 1–2 weeks)
- Transition to nighttime-only wear indefinitely
This simple nighttime routine protects your orthodontic investment for life. We’ll monitor your progress closely for up to six months after treatment and adjust your retention plan as needed.
Retainer Care: Essential Guidelines
Do:
- Store your retainer in its protective case whenever it's not in your mouth
- Rinse immediately after removal, then clean daily with mild dish soap and a soft toothbrush
- Soak 2–3 times weekly in colorless retainer cleanser (Retainer Brite, Steraligner, etc.)
- Clean your storage case regularly with mild soap and lukewarm water
- Always bring your retainer to follow-up appointments
Don't:
- Apply heat. Avoid hot water, dishwashers, car dashboards, or microwaves, as heat warps plastic
- Use toothpaste, bleach, or alcohol-based mouthwash on clear retainers (these are abrasive or harsh)
- Wrap it in napkins or tissues (it will likely be discarded accidentally)
- Leave it accessible to pets, they may damage retainers
- Force it into position if it doesn't seat properly, contact our office instead
Fixed Retainer Care
- Floss daily using a floss threader or water flosser to clean beneath the wire
- If the wire becomes loose or feels sharp, contact our office immediately — avoid attempting to adjust it yourself
- Maintain regular dental hygiene appointments and inform your hygienist about your bonded retainer
What to Expect During Your First Week
- Gentle pressure is normal — your retainer should feel snug but not painful
- Increased saliva production and a slight speech adjustment typically resolve within 1–2 days
- Minor spaces along the gumline may close as tissues settle into their final positions
- Contact us if you experience persistent rubbing or notice any cracks
Lost, Damaged, or Poor Fit?

How long do I need to wear my retainer?
Most patients transition to nightly wear for life. Dr. Callaway will confirm your exact plan at your visit.
Can I clean my clear retainer with toothpaste?
Skip toothpaste. It’s abrasive and can make clear retainers cloudy. Use mild dish soap and a soft brush; soak a few times a week in a retainer cleanser.
What if my retainer doesn’t fit anymore?
Don’t force it. Call us right away. We may adjust it or make a quick replacement to keep teeth from shifting.
